Warning Signs

When a Small Kitchen Needs New Life

Many New Lenox homes near downtown have old kitchens. Some go back to the 1900s. These rooms are often tight. They have plaster walls and old wires that need work. We see this a lot in Spencer's Crossing and Bradshaw Farms. Oak cabinets from the 1990s are old too now. Do your cabinets stick? Are your counters chipped? Does the layout waste space? Then it's time to call us. Waiting just makes things worse. Small kitchens show damage fast. We've seen it happen many times. A kitchen upgrade also adds real value to your home.[1]

Common Projects

Outdated Oak Cabinets

Builder-grade cabinets from the 90s look old and waste space. We swap them for layouts that fit your kitchen better. We've replaced dozens of these sets in New Lenox homes alone.

Cramped Original Layouts

Older homes near downtown often have small, tight kitchens. We find ways to open up the flow without adding space. A smart tip: moving one wall often opens things up more than a full addition.

Worn Laminate Counters

Laminate chips and stains over time. A new countertop changes the whole feel of a small kitchen. One common mistake: picking a counter before fixing the layout underneath it.

Outdated Electrical

Homes with old wiring need updates to meet code. We handle the permit process through the Village for you. We've fixed wiring in homes built back in the 1900s.

Poor Storage Solutions

Small kitchens need smart storage. We design cabinets and shelves that make every inch count. A simple pull-out shelf often solves years of clutter.

Plumbing or Sink Moves

Moving a sink means following Illinois plumbing rules. We take care of the details so nothing gets flagged later. We've seen jobs stall when folks skip this step.

Bill was fantastic to work with. I had an idea in mind what I wanted for my small laundry room, but unsure how to make it all work. His idea to add a deep, panty-like cabinet to fit vacuums, mops, and ironing board worked out perfectly. The pull-out drawers for soaps, the steamer, the iron, and many other essentials have been so convenient for storage. I will use him for my next project.
Thank you so much for your excellent work. I will definitely use your services for my next project.

After another contractor flaked out, Bill went above and beyond to finish our kitchen remodel. He didn’t stop until we were completely satisfied. He is unmatched when it comes to customer satisfaction.

We are extremely pleased to have discovered RBI. Initially, we were set on re-facing, but something felt off. Once we met Bill, everything changed. They made a minor reconfiguration that enhanced the functionality of my kitchen. They provided us with high-quality all-wood cabinetry and finishes that we thought were beyond our budget. Bill also sourced a stunning quartz countertop for us. Remarkably, the total cost was almost the same as the re-facing option. Additionally, they painted our kitchen, upgraded our electrical system, repaired our tile floor, installed new lighting, and assisted us in acquiring a new microwave hood and dishwasher. The products, craftsmanship, and pricing were all excellent. We had a fantastic experience!

Quick Answers

Small Kitchen Remodel Questions

Here are answers to the questions New Lenox homeowners ask most.

  • How much does a small kitchen remodel cost?

Most small kitchen jobs in New Lenox cost $8,000 to $25,000 or more. The price depends on cabinets, counters, and any plumbing or wire changes. We give a free estimate first, so you know the cost upfront.

  • How long does a small kitchen remodel take?

Most small kitchens take two to four weeks start to finish. Timing depends on permits and when materials arrive. We also plan around Illinois weather, since wood cabinets need time to settle before we put them in.

  • Should I do it myself or hire a pro?

DIY is fine for small cosmetic changes. But plumbing and wiring need a licensed pro. Will County needs permits for structural or utility work. We make sure it gets approved by the Village the first time.

  • Is a small remodel better than a full gut job?

A small remodel costs less and finishes faster than a full gut job. It works well if your layout is already good and just needs new finishes. A full gut job makes more sense if walls or pipes need to move.

  • How do I know if I need a remodel now?

Do your cabinets stick? Are counters chipped? Is the wiring old? Don't wait on these things. Small problems in older New Lenox homes grow worse each season. Calling early usually costs less than waiting for bigger repairs.

  • What are signs my kitchen needs a remodel?

Watch for loose cabinet doors, outlets with no GFCI, and worn laminate counters. Older homes near downtown New Lenox often hide old wiring behind plaster walls. These signs usually mean it's time for an upgrade.

  • Do I need a permit for a small kitchen remodel?

It depends on the job. Cosmetic changes like new cabinet fronts usually don't need a permit. Electrical, plumbing, or wall removal work needs approval from the Village's Community Development Department. We handle that process for you.
